Holiday Greetings, Pickford Film Center Capital Campaign committee members, donors and supporters...
In the spirit of the season I’d like to take a moment to reflect upon the tremendous progress Pickford Film Center (PFC) has made in the past year. In 2007, our board and staff have grown and strengthened; we welcomed Kirsten Barron and Debi Loober to the board, and Lindsay Hamsik to our staff as the fundraising coordinator. Construction at PFC began in earnest, with extensive demolition, excavation, interior masonry and seismic retrofitting. PFC is now bigger and better with an additional 6,000 sq. ft. of usable basement space, improved access and a ready-when-we-are elevator shaft.
In campaign news, The Filmmaker’s Circle Major Donor Group has been a huge success, and is nearing completion. On the community fundraising front, seat sales continue while grassroots efforts from organizations as diverse as Charitable Feast and General Mills/Small Planet Foods are galvanizing support for PFC's important work and leadership in the Bellingham arts community. In addition, two favorite local businesses have come together with the Pickford to create a 'night on the town', proceeds going directly to the capital campaign. See below for details.
We truly have much to celebrate this holiday season, and above all I want to acknowledge the importance of each one of you in helping us achieve our mission. As PFC supporters your generosity is what enables us to grow and continue to bring the finest in independent film and educational programming to the entire community now and for many years to come.
Thanks for your continued enthusiasm and support!
- Alice Clark, WFA Executive Director

Pickford Projectionist Named Youth Activist of the Year
Last month, the American Civil Liberties Union of Washington honored Alex Hudson, a Pickford Cinema projectionist and Western Washington University alumna, with the 2007 youth activist of the year award.

In Seattle, on Nov. 3 the ACLU of Washington recognized Hudson for her contributions to youth empowerment. “The tribute is awarded once a year to a person who is actively working to forward youth rights.” Hudson said.
Hudson, the co-founder of Western’s ACLU student club, was president of the club from 2005 to 2007. In her work as president, Hudson organized events addressing such diverse topics as; the PATRIOT Act, net neutrality, Hurricane Katrina, domestic spying and reproductive rights. Hudson also traveled with the ACLU to Olympia and Washington D.C. to lobby for issues such as felony voter disenfranchisement and same-sex marriage equality.
Hudson’s work as a projectionist at the Pickford Cinema helps inform her ongoing involvement with the ACLU. “Film is such a powerful medium for sending messages,” Hudson said. “Every time I watch a film, especially a political documentary, I am reminded that the work of the ACLU is important and worthwhile.”
